ABOUT CAMP
It’s no secret that the outside of a horse is good for the inside of a child! Working around horses helps children build confidence and gain a sense of responsibility, discipline, determination, and commitment. Campers will make new friends (two-legged and four-legged!) or strengthen bonds with old buddies.
Summer Camp will have a new look for 2010. Each week of camp will feature a different theme so that parents can sign their child up for what interests him or her the most. We tackle everything we can in one short week, and we welcome suggestions of topics you would like to see your child learn about. All camps are hands on and include a daily ride.
Here’s What Parents Need to Know
Camp hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Please arrive on time (but no more than 15 minutes early) because we have many fun activities to enjoy!
Cost is $300 per week. All campers will receive a summer camp t-shirt, certificate, ribbon, horseshoe picture frame, scrapbook page, highlight DVD, and coupon for discounted riding lessons.
Students should pack a lunch to eat in the hay loft or out by the pasture with the horses each afternoon. Students should wear jeans, hard soled boots with a heel, and bring a helmet (we can provide one if necessary).
They may want tennis shoes and shorts to wear while not riding.
Cameras and horse treats are permitted and encouraged!

Duzan Riding Academy welcomes beginners!
Horse Show Camp (ages 6 and up)
Participants will practice preparing horses for shows including advanced grooming, bathing, clipping, braiding/banding, leg wrapping, and loading a horse on the trailer. Students learn horse show technique, etiquette, judging, and practice critiquing themselves and other horses and riders. Daily rides will be structured as a warm up ride, and then campers will participate in practice classes such as western pleasure, hunter under saddle, horsemanship, equitation, trail, showmanship, and ground poles as appropriate for their level of ability and preference. On Friday, participants will prepare their horses and put on a horse show for parents.
Horsemanship Camp (ages 5-7)
Students will learn the basics of horse care including grooming, bathing, what horses eat, hoof care, parts of the bridle and saddle, parts of the horse, breeds, colors, and markings through hands on activities, games, and crafts. Riding time will include learning the fundamentals of horseback riding, simple obstacle courses, and equitation patterns. Students will learn the foundations of jumping (not over real jumps, but over poles that lay on the ground). Camp activities for these youngsters will be age appropriate so that various subjects will be fun and easy to learn! Students will complete an obstacle course for parents on Friday.
Horsemanship Camp (ages 8-13)
Riding time will include fun and challenging activities to broaden campers’ understanding of horse behavior and training. Riding time will focus on the fundamentals of horseback riding, obstacle courses and equitation patterns. Students will learn the foundations of jumping (not over real jumps, but over poles that lay on the ground). Students who are familiar with jumping and can do it safely will be allowed to take horses over small jumps. Students will learn facts about the horse industry, showmanship (working with the horse as a team while on the ground), elements of horse showing, and the basics of horse care including grooming, bathing, preventive health care, hoof care, and detailed nutrition and anatomy of the horse. Students will play games to help them learn parts of the bridle and saddle, parts of the horse, breeds, colors, and markings. Students will complete an obstacle course for parents on Friday.
Horse Health Care Camp (ages 8-13)
Students will learn about first aid for the horse, deworming, bandaging hooves and legs, common horse health problems, preventive care, proper horse diet, supplements and medicine, hoof care, and teeth care. This camp will also feature guest speakers with horse shoeing and veterinary backgrounds. The week will end with a “Horse Bowl” in which students will compete jeopardy style to showcase what they have learned during the week.
